Secret Ingredients – 7

The Miscon 32 Interlude is over. Back to our regularly scheduled programming!

In case you need reminding –

I’m starting a new series on here about the books that influenced me growing up.

These are the books that shaped my brain. Gave me my fears, values, and passions.

The Julie Secret Ingredients!

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret

Judy Blume also wrote Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, which I adored. I could relate to Peter. I didn’t have a brother who messed up everything, but everything was messed up.

Peter and Margaret’s emotional states matched mine quite well.

That was key: Interior Emotion. Absolutely masterful. It was like Blume followed us all around and listened to us thinking. It didn’t even matter the outside circumstances, we all had the commonality of feeling unheard, insecure, and frustrated with our bodies, our parents, and our peers.

It’s odd to look back on those memories and hold Blume’s popularity in my head at the same time. It creates a paradox. If we all loved those books, doesn’t that imply we were all struggling in the same ways? It’s an interesting and compassionate thought.

Do you think we continue to struggle in the same way as others, yet still feel alone as adults?
